Post-Treatment Instructions After Tonsillectomy (Tonsil Removal)

Please follow these instructions carefully to help you recover safely after your tonsil surgery.

1. Take Your Medicines

Take all medicines prescribed by your doctor as instructed. Pain and discomfort in the throat are common after surgery. Do not take additional painkillers without consulting your doctor.

2. Drink Plenty of Fluids

Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration. Take small, frequent sips if swallowing is painful.

3. Choose Suitable Foods

Start with foods that are easy to swallow, as advised by your doctor. Avoid very hot, spicy, sharp or hard foods that may irritate your throat.

4. Get Adequate Rest

Rest properly and avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and vigorous physical activities until your doctor allows them.

5. Throat and Ear Pain

Throat pain, pain while swallowing and pain felt in the ears are common during recovery. Discomfort may temporarily increase several days after surgery.

6. Healing of the Throat

White or yellowish patches may appear where the tonsils were removed. These are usually part of normal healing and should not be scraped or removed.

7. Watch for Bleeding

Any fresh bleeding from the mouth or throat, or vomiting blood, requires immediate emergency medical attention. Do not wait for the bleeding to stop on its own.

8. Follow-Up Care

Contact your doctor if you develop a persistent high fever, cannot drink enough fluids, have uncontrolled pain or experience any unusual symptoms. Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment.

Remember, complete healing usually takes around one to two weeks. Always follow your surgeon's specific instructions.
